Course Overview
Skills Provider is an accredited provider of The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism – Tier 1. This short online course is designed to equip health and social care staff with the essential knowledge and skills needed to deliver high-quality, person-centred care to people with learning disabilities and autistic people. It is suitable for all staff who support individuals in these settings.
The training is named in memory of Oliver McGowan, whose death highlighted the critical need for improved understanding, skills, and awareness among health and social care professionals when supporting autistic people and those with learning disabilities.
The course is aligned with the learning outcomes set out in the DHSC document Right to be Heard (2019) and the Core Capabilities Framework for Supporting People with a Learning Disability and Supporting Autistic People.

Course Content
Tier 1 of the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is delivered through a one-hour online interactive session hosted by our dedicated team of experts. This session is co-trained by individuals with personal experience of autism and learning disabilities, who bring their own stories and advice to the training.
The one-hour course covers the following topics:
- Understanding learning disabilities
- Understanding autism
- Making reasonable adjustments
- Reflecting on attitudes and behaviours
- Effective communication
- Delivering person-centred support
- Promoting independence
- Challenging common misconceptions
- Taking a positive and respectful approach to care
Course Prerequisites
To take part in Tier 1 training, learners must first complete the free online e-learning course provided by Health Education England. Completion of this e-learning is a mandatory pre-course requirement.
Access This Training
Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training focuses on building awareness and understanding rather than teaching treatments or specific interventions. It provides staff with the essential knowledge and skills needed to support positive, respectful health and social care experiences for people with a learning disability and/or autistic people.
This programme may only be delivered by Skills Provider trainers who are approved by Health Education England – Oliver’s Campaign and hold a unique trainer PIN.

Programme Cost
£500 per day for groups of up to 30 participants
£30 per individual learner
Course Duration
The session lasts 1 hour, followed by a live Q&A.
Mode of Delivery
This training is delivered exclusively online via Microsoft Teams, providing an interactive and engaging learning experience. Each session is led by an experienced, accredited Oliver McGowan Trainer and supported by two co-trainers with lived experience of autism and learning disabilities.
